List any FAMOUS rap songs with REAL drums on them
Lives for gear
Do bongos count?
F*ck it up Yella....
the song that made me an MC
Lives for gear
those tunes dont seem famous to me.
There might be some stuff by the Beastie Boys, but even that might not be rap it might be like Groove Holmes. But Sabotage comes to mind. And that's a pretty annoying tune, but it was a "hit"(?), or at least the video was.
"you got me" by the roots won a grammy! hows that for famous?
the stet song i posted is an undisputed hip hop classic (famous to real hip hop heads...its before yo MTV raps!)

No samples. It has to be a live recording

Im checking out In Full Gear by Stet. Was that entire album acoustic drums? It sounds like a lot of live instrumentation. Never really dug too deep into their catalog though (I'm a young head)

Interesting, but how would you know without some studio-footage from the sessions? And even then, chopping, looping, cutting and overdubbing... Lots of tracks sound like "real drums" but it's just guessing. Samplers, Sample-libraries, sampling from sources with live recordings, live drums triggering samples, e-drums, drum replacing with vsti's, overprocessed stuff that sound nothing likke live at all, good processed stuff that sounds like coming from a drum machine...

nah...by that 2nd album i think the live drumming was mostly non-existant
almost the entire sugar hill catalog and a lot of other hip hop records from 1979 to around 1982 before drum machines got popular. rapper's delight being the most famous i'd say...
the entire wild style soundtrack has live drums as well.
a couple examples from a bit later on...

I would not call these songs "famous", but The Brand New Heavies-
Heavy Rhyme Experience, Vol. 1contains all live instrumentation (including drums), keys, bass etc. etc. with some famous M.C.'s getting loose with a REAL band.
Grand Puba Maxwell a.k.a. Attribute Haji

Ed OG
Pharcyde
Gangstarr
Masta Ace
Kool G. Rap
Black Sheep
.................
BlackRoc album feat Mos Def, Jim Jones, and others.
Edit: sorry not much in the way of famous
Lives for gear
1500 or nothin
Yeah first band that comes to mind is The Roots. But it's weird, most of the time ?uestlove is trying to emulate a beat maker like Dilla so it ends up sounding sampled anyway. Do You Want More would be the last album where his drums sounded like live drums for the entire album. I wouldn't consider it to be really popular though. Things Fall Apart won them a grammy and barely made platinum so i guess that album counts.
I would second the Rappers Delight thing. Most people think they used the break but back then they used a house band to redo the loops on all the recordings.
Seems like anytime you see a rapper LIVE now he has a big backup band.

You realize that rap / hip hop started with real drums right?
see everything early Sugar Hill Records...
they were using full bands to copy famous dance beats to rap over before rappers owned drum machines.
the crossover gained momentum with people like Davy DMX etc who mixed sampling and beats into live instruments...
on the east coast at least.
